DINAR : ARAB-MUSLIM CURRENCY IN GOLD
This heading comes from the Latin word " denarius-aureus ", which means gold coin and which refers at the origin to a Roman currency with a ten as value that was used as synonym of solidus, byzantine currency which the Arabs had known before Islam.
After Syria's conquest, having no currency of their own, the Arabs continued at the beginning to use in their commercial transactions the byzantine solidus. Then they minted imitations. It was only under the Kalif Abdul-Malik Marwen's reign in the year 77 Hejri/696-697 Gregorian that the Arabs finally minted the first dinar of Arab type , purely epigraphic illuminating any figurative representation. This monetary reform was introduced in North Africa only later, in year 100H,718-719G. Nowadays, the dinar ended up by referring to metal dinar coins (Nickel, copper etc.) or notes, having no relation with the classical Arab monetary unit.
In Tunisia, the dinar has been the country's monetary unit since November 1958. Its value is 1000 millimes.
